In the Canyon

“In the Canyon” 24×30 oil
Working on larger work for an opening at the Sedona Arts Center in Feb. This is a spot I pass each day on my drive up and down Oak Creek Canyon.

Schnebly Hill Vista

“Schnebly Hill Vista” 12×12 oil
For the landscape venture in the workshop we visited Schnebly Hill Vista which is directly across the little valley from the Arts Center. We explored different compositional possibilities with this view. Various horizontals and verticals and in this case a square.

Workshop Demo

“Fall Grand Canyon” 12×16 oil
This demo was done during the workshop last week. Mainly to illustrate the use of palette knife and brush together and the power of directional mark-making in creating effective planes and forms. The same lessons apply to the Grand Canyon as to painting drapery or the human form.
We really had a great time. I am always blessed with a diverse group. We all start at the same place with the same lessons and by the end of the week everyone is very much on their own page with their own style and subject matter. My next 5-day workshop “Painting without Fear” is taking place June 11 – 15, 2012. Details HERE.

Rock Dynamics

“Rock Dynamics” 6×8 oil

It has been awhile since I have worked small. In the back of mind this is research for larger work, (like this one would be good with a bit more space to right if it were larger) There are qualities of the process of working small that are so engaging. Especially the ability to make changes quickly, allowing one to evaluate what is happening while one is working and just adapt. Alla Prima!

Toward Sedona

“Toward Sedona” 6×8 oil

I’m working on some 6×8 studies for larger work. I enjoyed the dark colorful shadows in this one as well as the composition (a composite of a couple different things but very much like an actual view I painted from life that is obstructed by some houses).
